  1. What is Umling La and why is it special?

Umling La, at 19,024 ft (5,798m), is the highest motorable road in the world. It’s higher than both Khardung La and Marsimik La. Reaching it by bicycle is an extreme adventure and a huge achievement for any cyclist.

  1. How difficult is this expedition?

This is a high-altitude, challenging expedition. While the terrain is mostly rideable, the thin air and altitude make it physically demanding. Riders should have good endurance and prior experience with high-altitude or multi-day rides.

  1. How fit do I need to be for this expedition?

You should be able to cycle 50–70 km daily, including uphill sections. We recommend at least 6–8 weeks of training, focusing on cardio endurance and leg strength. Talk to us, and we’ll guide you on how to prepare.

  1. Is this a supported expedition?

Yes, this is a fully supported expedition. A backup vehicle will carry your luggage, food, spare parts, and provide assistance in case of fatigue or emergencies.

  1. Do I need to bring my own cycle?
You can either bring your own MTB or rent a high-quality geared mountain bike from us. Please inform us in advance of your preference.
  2. What is the total distance covered?

The total cycling distance from Leh to Umling La and back (including Hanle and Chisumle) is around 450 km.

  1. What’s the altitude profile like?

You’ll ride between 3,500m (Leh) and 5,798m (Umling La). Key locations like Nyoma, Hanle, and Chisumle are all above 4,000m. Acclimatization is crucial.

  1. Do I need to acclimatize before the ride?

Yes, absolutely. You will spend at least two nights in Leh and around to help your body adjust before starting the ride. Riders coming from lower altitudes must not skip this phase. The itinerary is designed incorporating acclimatization need.

  1. Is there vehicle support during the ride?

Yes. A support vehicle will carry luggage, spares, basic medical supplies, and can pick up riders if needed. We ride light, but you should be self-reliant with gear like hydration, snacks, and spares.

  1. What type of bicycle is required?

A mountain bike or gravel bike

  1. Is the route paved all the way?

Most of the route is paved or semi-paved, but there are rough patches, especially near passes and in remote sections like Hanle to Chisumle and towards Umling La.

  1. What’s the accommodation like on the route?

Expect a mix of guesthouses and homestays, in remote areas. Accommodations are best available in the  area. All the stays are twin sharing.

  1. Is there network connectivity?

Only BSNL/JIo Postpaid works in some regions like Hanle and Nyoma. Many stretches have no network at all. The support vehicle will have a satellite communication device for emergencies.

  1. Do I need any permits?

Yes. Umling La lies in a restricted border zone. Special permits are required and will be arranged by our team. Carry your valid ID (Aadhar, Passport) for verification.

  1. What’s the best time to do this ride?

The window is mid-June to late September. Outside this period, the route is often closed due to snow and sub-zero temperatures.

  1. Can I attempt this as my first Himalayan cycling trip?

We don’t recommend it. This ride is suited for cyclists with prior experience in high-altitude cycling, multi-day expeditions, or long-distance riding.

  1. Is oxygen or medical aid available?

Yes. The support vehicle carries a portable oxygen cylinder and a basic first-aid kit. However, you must be aware of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) symptoms and report them early.
