This expedition targets Mentok Kangri (6,250m), a stunning peak in the Tso Moriri region, with Korzok village as the nearest settlement. Ideal for climbers with some technical experience, the route combines a 7-day trek from Rumtse to Korzok through the Changthang Plateau with a moderately challenging ascent of snow and rock. The itinerary prioritizes acclimatization, offering breathtaking views of Tso Moriri Lake and the Himalayan peaks.

Day 1: Drive from Leh to Rumtse (4,050m) – 3 hours
  • Drive (~70 km, 3 hours) to Rumtse village on the Leh-Manali highway, visiting monasteries like Hemis or Thiksey en route.

  • Gear check and expedition briefing with climbing team.

  • Overnight: Camping at Rumtse.

Day 2: Rumtse to Kyamar (4,050m) – 4 hours, 10 km
  • Begin trek along the ancient salt route to Kyamar, passing nomadic Changpa camps.

  • Enjoy views of the Indus and Zanskar River confluence.

  • Overnight: Camping at Kyamar.

Day 3: Kyamar to Tisaling (4,200m) – 6–7 hours, 13 km
  • Trek to Tisaling, crossing Kyamar La (5,125m) and Mandalchan La (5,170m) with views of snow-capped peaks.

  • Descend to a temporary shepherd shelter at Tiri Doksa en route.

  • Overnight: Camping at Tisaling.

Day 4: Tisaling to Ponganagu (4,250m) – 6 hours, 12 km
  • Ascend to Shibuk La (5,230m) with views of Tso Kar Lake.

  • Descend to Ponganagu, a campsite near the lake, rich in wildlife like kiang and marmots.

  • Overnight: Camping at Ponganagu.

Day 5: Ponganagu to Nuruchan (4,300m) – 6 hours, 12 km
  • Trek along the shores of Tso Kar Lake, a flat trail with birdwatching opportunities (bar-headed geese, brahminy ducks).

  • Arrive at Nuruchan village, interacting with Changpa nomads.

  • Overnight: Camping at Nuruchan.

Day 6: Nuruchan to Gyamar Barma (5,100m) – 7–8 hours, 14 km
  • Cross Horlam Kongka La (4,900m), entering nomadic grazing lands with yaks and pashmina goats.

  • Trek to Gyamar Barma, a high-altitude campsite near twin lakes (Kyun Tso and Kyun Tso II).

  • Overnight: Camping at Gyamar Barma.

Day 7: Gyamar Barma to Gyamar (5,200m) – 3–4 hours, 8 km
  • Short trek to Gyamar, navigating gentle slopes with views of the Changthang Plateau.

  • Rest and acclimatize for the upcoming high-altitude stages.

  • Overnight: Camping at Gyamar.

Day 8: Gyamar to Korzok (4,500m) – 6–7 hours, 12 km
  • Trek over Yalung Nyau La (5,440m), with mesmerizing views of Tso Moriri Lake.

  • Descend to Korzok village, visit Korzok Monastery.

  • Overnight: Camping or homestay at Korzok.

Day 9: Korzok to Peldo (4,915m) – 5–6 hours, 10 km
  • Trek to Peldo, a high-altitude campsite with views of Tso Moriri and surrounding peaks.

  • Prepare for the summit climb.

  • Overnight: Camping at Peldo.

Day 10: Peldo to Skurchu (Base Camp, 4,750m) – 4 hours, 8 km
  • Trek to Skurchu, the base camp for Mentok Kangri, navigating rocky terrain and moraines.

  • Set up camp and review climbing techniques (rope work, crampon use).

  • Overnight: Camping at Skurchu.

Day 11: Skurchu to Advance Camp (5,630m) – 4 hours, 6 km
  • Ascend to Advance Camp, a high-altitude campsite closer to the summit.

  • Rest and prepare for the summit push.

  • Overnight: Camping at Advance Camp.

Day 12: Summit Day: Mentok Kangri (6,250m) and Return to Skurchu – 8–10 hours, 10 km
  • Early start (~2 AM) for summit ascent. Climb moderate snow slopes and rocky sections (Grade PD, some technical skills required).

  • Reach Mentok Kangri summit, with stunning views of Tso Moriri and Chamser Kangri.

  • Descend to Skurchu Base Camp by evening.

  • Overnight: Camping at Skurchu.

Day 13: Extra Day
  • Reserved for contingencies (e.g., weather delays, additional rest, or a second summit attempt).

  • Optional short walk around Skurchu or rest at camp.

  • Overnight: Camping at Skurchu or Korzok (if descent is feasible).

Day 14: Drive from Korzok to Leh (220 km, 7 hours)
  • Scenic drive along the Indus River via Mahe Bridge and Chumathang hot springs.

  • Arrive in Leh by evening to celebrate the expedition’s success.

  • Overnight: Guesthouse or hotel in Leh.
